At leisure in Flemish Brabant
Hageland, walking country
To the east of Leuven is the magnificent Hageland. This region offers unspoiled scenery and sleepy villages as well as six dynamic provincial towns. Hageland is a walker's paradise with many signposted walks. You can also cycle along the interconnecting bicycle network, past courtyard farms and Roman "tumuli". A little further on, the Horst Castle proudly stands guard in the middle of the lake. And the children? They are already splashing around in the open-air swimming pool of the provincial domains in Kessel-Lo and Diest. Or are we talking about nature lovers? In Zoutleeuw, their shadows are reflected in the lake at Het Vinne, a unique ecological creation!
The Green Belt, parks and gardens
To the west of Leuven lies the Green Belt, which surrounds Belgium's capital city of Brussels. This region boasts magnificent parks and gardens, sometimes literally in the shadow of this metropolis. It was here that Bruegel set up his painter's easel and it was here, many years ago, that the Brabant draught horse began its international career. At the bar or in an outdoor cafe, you will be served with generous glasses of a locally brewed Lambiek, Geuze, Palm or Primus.
The Green Belt is made up of three regions:
the Pajottenland and Zenne Valley,
the Brabant Kouters and
the Dijleland.
They each have their individual characters. In other words, there are plenty of things to discover!
