Sint-Geertruikerk en Sint-Geertruiabdij (Saint Gertrude’s Church and Saint Gertrude’s Abbey)
Saint Gertrude’s Church
The church was constructed between the 13th and 15th century. The late Gothic tower, said to be one of the seven wonders of Leuven because its tower was built without securring pins, dates from 1454 and was constructed by the master builder of the Brussels' town hall, Jan van Ruysbroeck. In the church, noteworthy Late Gothic choir stalls can be admired. The abbey belonged to the Augustinian Order.
Saint Gertrude’s Abbey
This abbey is located at the heart of the Klein Begijnhof. The buildings, built between the 14th and 17th centuries, have been recently restored and found a new purpose as a housing complex. The Thierry wing was built after the First World War using bombed façades from the city. There is also a walled green oasis with old valuable trees. The entrance can be found in the Halfmaartstraat and the Karel van Lotharingenstraat.
