Heverleebos, Meerdaalwoud
The green lung of Leuven
Together with nearby Meerdaalwoud, Heverleebos represents a clear environmental and scenic beacon to the south of the city.
These two remnants of the large Kolen forest are still one of today's largest Flemish wood complexes. Both were selected as major nature reserves in the Regional Plan ning Programme for Flanders and belong to the European ecological network. The grid-shaped road pattern links the two woods. Yet the vision on both wooded areas differs.
Heverleebos
Heverleebos has developed into a real city wood where natural variation is subordinate to the recreation of city dwellers. Walkers, cyclists and all kinds of holiday-makers can relax there in a most enjoyable setting. Large maps immediately offer the visitor the required information, benches are available in various locations and there are explanatory notices near the plants and trees.
Meerdaalwoud
As opposed to this nature prevails in the Meerdaalwoud. Some sections have restricted access so that nature can thrive in all its diversity.
