Restoration of the Town Hall: structural works
See which demolition and structural works we carry out on the historic Town Hall.
Works on the former police station
New entrance
The former police station will get an important new role: it becomes the new entrance to the city hall, with a city balcony. That is why we need to rebuild it thoroughly.
Front façade
The front façade on the Grote Markt will stay. We remove the outside staircase, because the new entrance will be at the same level as the Grote Markt.
Side and back façades
We demolish the 3 other façades of the former police station. First, we carefully remove the natural stone from the façades. We will reuse this stone later for the new façades.
Interior
Inside, we remove all lighting, heating devices, partition walls and floor coverings.
Foundation
We make openings in the floor at specific places, so we can deepen the foundation underneath.
Stability
We carry out complex stability works. These are needed because the new entrance building will have 2 extra floors. We first carry out archaeological research and then strengthen the foundation.
Works on the city hall
Basement
In the basements of the Voorhuis, we prepare the construction of a new lift shaft.
Demolition
In the council basements, we remove the non‑historic partition walls.
Central staircase
The large central staircase in the city hall will be removed. We will reuse the blue stone later for the paths in the inner garden.
Interior
We carefully remove the marble wall coverings and reuse the marble in other rooms.
Repairs
In several places, we remove parts of the floors. We repair walls and floors in brick and concrete.
Heating
We remove the heating devices.
Load‑bearing structures
We study the wooden load‑bearing structures and restore them where needed.
15th‑century roof truss
In the attic of the Achterhuis, we remove the plasterboard panels. Now we have a full view of the roof truss from the 15th century.
Roofs and façades
We work on the roofs and façades along Naamsestraat. Scaffolding is placed against the façades for this work.
